Antigonish Learn to Play Ringette

Oct. 09, 2024

Hello Antigonish!

We want to reintroduce Ringette to you and we are starting with Intro 2 Ringette!

Ringette has been played in Nova Scotia since the early 1970s. Antigonish used to be a Hub of Ringette in NS, and we want to bring it back to your community!

What is Ringette?

Ringette is a uniquely Canadian winter ice sport - often dubbed the fastest sport on ice! The main objective of Ringette is to use a stick to shoot a ring into the opposing team's goal. The team with the highest score at the end wins. Ringette is a great choice if you're looking for a safe, competitive sport for your child. They'll learn to skate, pass, and play on a team - all while making friends and having fun!

More information on Ringette can be found on the Ringette Canada website: https://www.ringette.ca/our-sport/what-is-ringette/

What is “Intro 2 Ringette”?

Intro 2 Ringette is a safe, fun, low-cost, 7-week program that will introduce players 4-13 years old to the sport of Ringette. Intro 2 Ringette components include rules orientation, basic strategies of the game, and time to practice the basics of ring control.

Each Intro 2 Ringette session is 50 minutes in length and is led by certified instructors who are trained to break down and teach skills to brand new players in a low instructor-to-participant ratio.

All of our instructors have coach training and experience, including Safe Sport training, and most are members of the St FX University Ringette team. And they are all excited to share their love of ringette with you and your child!

Not only are we going to teach your child how to skate and play Ringette, but we are also going to introduce them to a world that:

  • builds confidence
  • supports creativity
  • creates friendships that last a lifetime!

 What you need:

Here is the best part - Intro 2 Ringette has been designed to introduce participants to the sport in a safe, no-contact manner that requires minimal equipment. This enables us to offer Intro 2 Ringette as a low-cost program that is more easily accessible for anyone who is not yet prepared to invest in a full equipment purchase!

Participants require only the following:

  • helmet with face mask
  • Gloves or heavy mittens
  • Skates
  • Warm clothes (snow pants are also recommended to help keep dry)

Of course, participants are always welcome to wear additional equipment if they have it!

Program Location & Dates

The program will be run out of the Antigonish Arena on the following Saturdays from 10am-11am:

Saturday, October 26

Saturday, November 2

Saturday, November 9

Saturday, November 16

Is there an opportunity to continue playing Ringette in Antigonish if my child enjoys the Fall program?

Yes! Ringette NS plans to run a second program in January and February, and our longer term plans are to establish a local association in Antigonish next season!

Is there an opportunity for me to become involved as a parent?

Yes! We welcome all interested community members to help us rebuild the Antigonish ringette community. Please contact Stacey at execdirector@ringette.ns.ca for information on how to get involved.
